We'll all be on probation

The eye, stuck on the peephole, looks on the landing. Quickly count how many people enter the house opposite: one, two, three, four and so on … If you mark them on a piece of paper, complete with the time of entry. And maybe even the exit one. And, should he recognize any faces, – why not? – even the first and last names. Here is ready reporting. It is not yet known who should deliver it to denounce the neighbor for having violated the measures designed by the government to tighten up contacts at home, but this is more or less the gist of the latest “gimmick” of the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza which, in these hours, is working to give birth to the new Dpcm.

An army of “spies”: this is what Hope dreams about. To make you shiver. Yet it is not the first time that we find ourselves having to deal with such crazy strategies. When, in 2018, the anti-corruption bill was voted, nicknamed by the pentastellated justicialists “Corrupted sweeps“, the figure of the undercover agent for corruption crimes was introduced into the legal system. His task? To tempt the politician by offering him a bribe.” If the politician takes it – Alessandro Di Battista explained at the time – he goes to jail ” Today we move from provocation to report. Here is the plan of the government – or at least of Hope – to get to control the Italians right inside their homes. The principle, for heaven’s sake, is also right: to make sure that the coronavirus no longer attacks the weakest sections of the population, namely the elderly. And, as major clusters erupt within the home, they are preparing to ban private parties and more generally the gatherings in homes. But how to check that this rule is followed slavishly without closing everyone in the house and returning to the self-certifications of those who are caught around?

“When there is a rule, it must be respected – Speranza a Che tempo che fa explained yesterday – Italians have shown that they do not need a carabiniere or a policeman to check them personally”. But it is clear that the minister is ready to raise the controls. “In private places, the owner, whether in family homes or association offices, can allow access to a maximum of ten people other than their own family resulting from the municipal registry – reads the draft of the next Dpcm – to ensure compliance with this requirement, the persons appointed by the public authority may at any time request access and proceed with the identification of the persons present in the property “. In short, we must expect the blitzes of police in our homes to see how many people we have invited for dinner. Obviously without even having the warrant of a judge in hand. Yet Article 14 of the Constitution clearly states that “the home is inviolable”. To decide where to wade they will rely on complaints from neighbors. “There will be reports”, admitted the same Minister of Health by Fabio Fazio. The denunciation, therefore.

In motivating his proposal, Speranza argued that there are “essential things and others not”. Health certainly is. But also the private property. Unless the government puts us all on probation.
