SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Carson Wentz caught Travis Fulgham with a 42-yard touchdown pass with 5:50 remaining to propel the Philadelphia Eagles to their first win of the season, a 25- 20 on Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers.
The Eagles (1-2-1) were playing without their top three receivers or second tight end Dallas Goeder, so the lesser-known Fulgham made the decisive play for Philadelphia.
The Eagles had fallen behind on the scoreboard after a mistake by Jalen Hurts. But Fulgham eluded cornerback Dontae Johnson and Wentz delivered a perfect pass to put Philadelphia up 18-14.
Then Nick Mullens threw an interception that Alex Singleton returned for a touchdown on the next offense for the 49ers (2-2), who suffered their second loss in as many home games.
Mullens lost three balls, including one on a play with Cre’Von LeBlanc that Malik Jackson recovered to enable the play that turned the scoreboard.
Mullens added 18 for 26 for 200 yards and a touchdown before being replaced by CJ Beathard after his third turnover.
Beathard led a touchdown play in the final minutes and another that reached the 33 line, but failed to complete the comeback.
Rookie Brandon Aiyuk had a 38-yard touchdown run and George Kittle had a career-high 15 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown to lead the Niners.
Wentz entered the game with the lowest passing rate and highest turnover rate in the NFL. But he ran for an 11-yard touchdon and threw for 193 yards and scored to put the Eagles in first place from the hapless NFC East with their first win of the season.
