Hypercholesterolemia is characterized by an excess of “bad cholesterol” in the blood. The preparation is based on a few steps:

  • Fill three quarters of the calabash with yerba mate leaves
  • Place your hand on the opening of the calabash and turn it over to collect the powder and leave only the leaves in the container
  • Slightly tilt the calabash so that the leaves are on one side only
  • Pour in cold water and wait a few minutes for the leaves to soak in
  • Insert the bombilla into the hollow side of the calabash
  • Add simmering water and start enjoying your drink

If you don’t have a calabash, these steps can be done with a mug. Yerba mate is also sold in capsule form.

What are the contraindications for yerba mate?

In high doses, yerba mate can be genotoxic and mutagenic. Genotoxic agents damage DNA and sometimes trigger genetic mutations. As for mutagens, they can also cause mutations within the body.
