The rapid tests that the Pan American Health Organization talks about (OPS) are is some that is based on the detection of antigens, which are substances or proteins of the coronavirus SARS-COV-2, reported the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell.
“Unlike all tests to detect cases of covid-19 that have been proposed throughout these months, these are based on the detection of virus antigens, not antibodies, “he said.
He stressed that at the moment in which the presence of these antigens is detected, it is said that the individual, from which the sample comes, has the virus at that moment, if he has symptoms it is a case of disease and if not, he is an asymptomatic carrier.
López-Gatell pointed out that Mexico is in a group of countries to which the OPS has offered them a donation of 200 thousand tests and three weeks ago, the director of Epidemiology, José Luis Alomía, instructed the Internal to evaluate the tests and “so we have more certainty of technical performance.
“As soon as they are evaluated there will be a recommendation and then Cofepris will be able to analyze whether this test is accepted or not,” he added.
He mentioned that a possible consequence of these tests could be a greater opportunity in the detection of cases and the result, in terms of statistics, is that a greater detection sensitivity can be generated.
“In this case, those who are positive to this test can be considerably asymptomatic cases and there will be a greater number of cases,” he concluded.
NNew rapid antigen tests could transform the response to covid-19: PAHO
The new affordable and reliable antigen diagnostic tests recently approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and that can be carried out anywhere, are aimed at transforming the region’s response to covid-19, by allowing health workers to do accurate and rapid tests, even in remote communities, said the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne.
“By providing results quickly, the new test enables front-line healthcare workers to better manage cases, because they can isolate patients to prevent further spread and begin treatment immediately,” Etienne noted. “If widely distributed , this new test will transform our response to covid-19 “, he considered.
