The different types of water

Tap water

Natural mineral waters

Natural mineral water is water exclusively of underground origin, collected either at a source or by drilling. Pure and having a perfectly mineral composition stable, it is not subjected to any chemical treatment or disinfection before bottling or thermal use.

Its benefits, recognized by the Academy of Medicine, depend on the composition of the water. Indeed, natural mineral waters contain various trace elements such as silica, fluorine, zinc, copper …

They are distributed as follows:

The “calcic” mineral waters (more than 150 mg / liter of calcium) which in particular help to solidify the bones. The bicarbonate mineral waters (bicarbonate content greater than 600 mg / liter) which improve digestion. The waters rich in magnesium, like Hepar, (more than 50 mg / liter of magnesium) which are recommended for transient constipation in pregnant women, children and the elderly.

To remember : mineral waters are sometimes very strongly mineralized. In fact, the body only assimilates a few minerals contained in water. The surplus is eliminated by reins. This is why it is essential to vary the waters and not to consume only strongly mineralized waters (unless your doctor has advised you).

Spring waters

The spring waters come from underground water tables located in all regions of France, and are subject to the same regulations as tap water. Microbiologically healthy, they must be bottled to the source.

Unlike mineral waters, spring water does not have to meet a minimum content of mineral salts. This is the reason why they can sometimes be recommended for the preparation of baby bottles.

Calcium deficiency: beware of fragile bones!

The bone loss and the weakening of the skeleton are problems that arise with age.

In addition to calcium, another mineral is essential for the good health of seniors: it is magnesium.

Seniors should consume it daily 480 mg (against 330 mg in adolescents and women, editor’s note).

So what to drink past 50 years ? We asked the question to Xavier Ballongue, general practitioner.

“From the age of 50, you should not consume one water, but several. You have to alternate between plain water and mineralized water, for their richness in magnesium and calcium”, explains Dr Ballongue.

Another important point: the water consumed must be adapted to health needs of each one. In other words, by taking into account its general form (fatigue …) and its potential diseases (hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis …).

So if you are prone to fractures, drink calcium-rich water can be interesting. Indeed the risk of fracture decreases significantly in seniors with calcium intakes. regular.

In case fragile bones, therefore prefer magnesian waters (containing more than 50 mg of magnesium per liter, editor’s note) like Hepar or Quezac.
