Coronavirus kills more than diabetes

In just over eight months, the SARS-CoV-2 virus reached a number of deaths that place it as the second cause of death in Mexico.

The Ministry of Health confirmed yesterday 104 thousand 873 deaths from the new coronavirus, 519 more than those caused by diabetes during 2019, which were 104 thousand 354, according to data from the Inegi updated in October.

In addition, figures from the Ssa indicate that four out of ten deaths due to the pandemic were diabetic.

This means that, of those who died from the virus, 40,449 suffered from diabetes, the second most common comorbidity among those killed by covid-19 after high blood pressure.

According to information from Inegi, last year mortality from diabetes was slightly higher in women than in men, with 52,643 and 51,711 deaths, respectively.

In contrast, the new coronavirus has been more deadly in men. Until the last update available yesterday on the coronavirus.gob.mx portal, 36.27% of the victims were women and 63.73% were men.

Since the first death from the new coronavirus in Mexico, on March 18, the disease slipped into the top 10 causes of death and rapidly escalated, displacing kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and influenza and pneumonia. among other.

COVID DISPLACES DIABETES IN DEATH

The SARS-CoV-2 virus yesterday became the second cause of death in the country, displacing diabetes mellitus.

In eight months and nine days, the new coronavirus killed 104,873 Mexicans, 519 more than diabetes during all of last year.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, four out of ten deaths from covid-19 (38.57%) were also diabetic.

This means that, of those who died from the new virus, 40,449 suffered from diabetes, the second most common comorbidity in those killed by covid-19, after high blood pressure.

In 2019, 104,354 Mexicans died of diabetes mellitus, that is, 286 every day, 12 every hour.

It took the SARS-CoV-2 virus 254 days to exceed that number. Covid-19, on average, has killed 413 Mexicans a day, 17 every hour.

According to information from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), last year, mortality from diabetes was slightly higher in women than in men, with 52,643 and 51,711 men deaths, respectively.

THE VIRUS, MORE LETHAL IN MEN

In contrast, the new coronavirus has been more deadly in men. Until the last update available on the coronavirus.gob.mx portal, 36.27% of the victims were women and 63.73% men.

By age, in 2019, diabetes registered the highest frequency of mortality in the group over 65 years of age. Meanwhile, deaths from covid-19 are mainly concentrated between 60 and 69 years of age.

On March 18 of this year, the first death confirmed by the new coronavirus was registered in Mexico, which by October 24 had already led more people to the grave than cancer itself during 2019.

The virus, which until last year did not appear on the list of deaths in Mexico, slipped into the top ten and rapidly escalated, displacing kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and influenza and pneumonia.

As of this Friday, the covid-19 had already killed 16,193 more people than malignant tumors, which last year caused the death of 88,680 people.

AND KEEP OVERCOMING DEATHS FROM OTHER CAUSES

The coronavirus today is also killing more Mexicans than liver disease, accidents, cerebrovascular diseases and homicides.

And now, the covid is more deadly than diabetes mellitus, also declared as a health emergency in the country, which between 2010 and 2019 killed 972,372 Mexicans, a figure that would be equivalent to the disappearance of all the inhabitants of Campeche.

On November 19, Mexico exceeded the barrier of 100,000 deaths from covid-19, which has become the most lethal communicable disease in at least half a century in the country, since influenza and pneumonia is the only cause of infectious death that has remained among the ten main causes of death among Mexicans, alternating since 2000 between the 8th, 9th and 10th place on the list.

For now, only the heart diseases from which 156 thousand 41 Mexicans died in 2019 surpass the SARS-CoV-2 virus in lethality. Adding another 51 thousand 168 deaths would rank as the leading cause of death in Mexico.
