A historic day lived Peugeot. The French firm, after a long work of four years and thousands of kilometers of tests, officially unveiled the new Landtrek, its long-awaited truck that allows it to return to a segment in which it participated a few years ago and with which it hopes to consolidate its privileged position in Latin America.
The model, developed in conjunction with Changan, the firm that gave life to the Hunter model, becomes part of the competitive segment of mid-size pick-ups, where it will meet Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan NP300.
It will be marketed in two phases. In the first stage, it will start its sale in Mexico, Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti and Chile, where it will arrive during the first half of 2021. Then, in phase 2, it will be sold in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.
“The launch of the New Peugeot Landtrek reaffirms the objective of internationalization of the brand, bringing to the market a true pick-up with all the strengths to successfully position itself in the segment. It is an unprecedented event for the region to be considered the first to commercialize this new star, confirming the importance of Latin America for the Peugeot brand. This new Pick-up complements our successful range of products, covering a new segment that is constantly growing ”, indicated Igor Dumas, General Manager Peugeot México and General Manager Groupe PSA Panamericana.
History in the segment
Peugeot has a little but real tradition in this segment. In 1938, on the eve of World War II, the brand offered in its catalog a commercial vehicle with a cargo box derived from the Peugeot 202.
The experience was repeated after the war, with the Peugeot 203, and then with the canvas-covered versions of the Peugeot 403 and 404.
In 1979, with its incredible commercial success, the Peugeot 504 was the first car of the brand to have a pick-up version, with more than 375,000 units.
Finally, a couple of years ago the Hoggar, a model that was based on the 207, but which did not repeat the celebrations of the 504, had with minimal success.
Now the goal is to once again captivate the public and expand the number of users by entering the truck segment, a space that sells more than 2.4 million units per year in the world, of which more than 400 thousand are sold in Latin America .
To achieve this goal, it has an exterior design with great personality and that incorporates genetic codes of the brand such as the vertical grill that welcomes the lion in its center and vertical LED lights, depending on the version.
At the level of dimensions, this medium truck measures 5.33 meters long and 1.92 meters wide, with a load capacity of 1.2 tons. In addition, in the presentation they stressed that it offers the greatest space in the pick-up box and that it can tow up to 3.5 tons.
The capabilities are also supported by the vehicle configuration, as it has an angle of attack of 29 °, 27 ° of departure and 25 ° of ventral, with a maximum lateral inclination of 42 °. The wading capacity, meanwhile, is 600 mm.
Regarding the motorization, as it had been advanced a few months ago, it will have two alternatives: a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with turbo, which delivers 210 Hp and 320 Nm of torque, and a 1.9-liter 150-Hp turbodiesel with 350 Nm of maximum torque.
The oil version will be associated with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the gasoline Landtrek can have a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Traction can be 4×2 and 4×4.
As for the technology equipment, they have a 10 ″ HD touch screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, it offers an all-terrain 360 ° panoramic vision system based on peripheral cameras and even 3D vision, to facilitate the detection of obstacles or passage through narrow roads.
In safety, depending on the version, it will have a series of elements such as the Hill Descent Control (which allows to keep the vehicle at very low speed and concentrate only on the steering), the Trailer Swing Control (towing assistance) with an ESP that it reacts automatically to unexpected trailer movements, plus six airbags, lane departure warning, front and rear sensors, among other systems.
