Renowned architect Ruy Ohtake used his elegant and creative streak to create, for the first time, a line of washbasins for bathrooms. It was also the debut of Roca launching a collection of products designed by a Brazilian professional, the Ruy Ohtake by Roca.
From this happy encounter, four models of vats were born, with a design inspired by the organic shapes, so striking in Ruy’s work, that refer to the curves of the sea waves, to the ever-changing line of the horizon and, according to the architect, in an element that summarizes the purest form of design, the egg.
“I started with the idea of an egg, as it is an element of nature of exceptional quality. The rigidity and hardness of the shell, even thin, is an impressive thing. Then I thought: I’m going to pose this challenge for Roca to make the vat as thin as possible ”, he reveals.
The challenge was readily accepted, as Roca relies on technology Fineceramic®, used in this project to highlight the curved design and create ultra-thin edges, just 3 mm thick. The versatility of the material allowed for a light design, with precision in the details created by Ruy, in addition to ensuring more durability to the piece because it is 30% more resistant than traditional ceramics.
Thus, Roca’s exclusive technology gave the architect freedom to create anything he wanted. And, as it was the first time he designed vats, he started with a reflection on the use of the piece in our daily lives. “The vat is used to collect water. The relationship between the water and the vat’s edge is beautiful and very important and the edge that I designed is wavy. As it fills with water, the contour of the border becomes more evident, what remains of space is the undulation. This design is the same as the horizon of the sea. It recalls the movement of water, the sea, the elements of nature. So, I decided to combine emotion with the unpredictable ”, explains Ruy.
Another striking detail of the collection is the matte finish, which brings a lot of personality and sophistication to the bathrooms. There are five colors available in this version – onyx, graffiti, beads, beige, matte white and coffee – and the option white gloss.
As for the shapes, Ruy designed an oval support bowl, with a sculptural look, in addition to three more models, one overlapping and two more supporting. All of them follow the same style of the organic trait developed by the architect.
World leader in complete bathroom solutions, Roca started in 2018 a series of partnerships with national architects and designers. This initiative reflects the company’s desire to connect more and more with the country’s culture and to value the talent of our professionals, who, like Ruy, know how to translate the lifestyle of Brazilians like nobody else.
It did not take long for this union of knowledge and talents to be recognized. In 2019, the collection Ruy Ohtake by Roca won two international award victories by winning the International Design Awards (IDA) and the Red Dot Awards: Best of the Best.
Awarded by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany, the Red Dot Awards is one of the most respected awards in the world. Roca’s oval vat won in the main category, Red Dot: Best of the Best. The organic lines and timeless design created by Ruy were then recognized as the best innovative design in the category, where major brands competed.
“We celebrate with great joy the achievement of the maximum award we received from the Red Dot Awards, recognized as one of the most respected in the world in terms of design. I shared the award with the entire product development team and, once again, I would like to thank the architect Ruy Ohtake, who believed in our partnership to produce the result of his experience with curved lines and the art that marks his career in architecture and in the design. The award undoubtedly elevates the work we do in Brazil and worldwide, ”says Sérgio Melfi, Commercial & Marketing Director.
