According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), around 20 million people in Germany suffer from high blood pressure. Men are slightly more likely to be affected than women. From the age of 50, however, the risk for women increases sharply and in the group of over 70-year-olds they have overtaken men.



So high blood pressure is a real widespread disease. Several factors play a role – and one of them is diet. This is where various herbs and spices come into play, the active ingredients of which can help lower high blood pressure.

AAccording to the RKI, medicine defines high blood pressure from 140/90. The consequences of chronic high blood pressure are severe and can also be fatal. The permanent overload of the heart and the possible changes in the arteries, for example due to arteriosclerosis, can trigger severe symptoms. This ranges from the impending loss of vision to strokes, heart attacks and heart failure. Die of it according to the RKI in Germany over 600,000 people per year.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best ways to avoid high blood pressure. And if it has already set in, it is all the more important to pay attention to a healthy diet. This does not only apply to staple foods such as vegetables, fruits or fish, herbs in particular contain active ingredients that can have a preventive and regulating effect. There is plenty of eugenol in basil. That is actually a fragrance, but it also lowers blood pressure. And it is a calcium inhibitor, so it protects against deposits in the blood vessels.


The parsley is so valuable because of its high content of carotenoids. These are plant pigments that also give carrots their color, for example. And they lower blood pressure too.


The key active ingredient in thyme is rosmarinic acid – and yes, it is also found in rosemary. However, there is even more of it in thyme. Rosmarinic acid also has antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory effects. Especially in overweight people with high blood pressure, the healing of internal inflammation is weakened, which means further stress for the organism. Rosmarinic acid can help here.


Garlic is not actually one of the herbs, but it should not go unmentioned here. The sulfur compounds it contains, especially allicin, are highly effective antihypertensive agents.


Also more of a spice, but one that is good for our heart: cinnamon. Which active ingredient exactly or which combination thereof is responsible for the antihypertensive effect of cinnamondo, has not yet been fully scientifically clarified – one thing is certain: it works.


Last but not least, the cardamom should be mentioned – also more spice than herb, but also highly recommended. Cardamom contains an abundance of antioxidants that lower blood pressure and it is also an effective calcium inhibitor for the blood vessels.
