Videos published on Twitter show damaged shops in the pedestrian zone and an injured person lying on the ground, as well as an ambulance. The “Triersche Volksfreund” quoted an eyewitness who spoke of a Range Rover SUV that had raced into the zone. People have flown through the air. A helicopter circles over the area.

Arrested motorists

The driver was arrested, the police said on Twitter on Tuesday. The car had been secured. It is possible that other people are fleeing. German media reports that several people were sitting in the car.

An eyewitness reports Focus: «I saw countless people jumping to the side, over 30 people were lying on the street, some of them motionless. The car felt like it was going at 70 to 80 kilometers per hour, not honking the horn, just accelerating. The city center was very busy. From the back it looked like an SUV, it could have been a jeep. ” Another passerby said that the car caught children too.

The background to the incident was initially unclear.

The police called on people in Trier / Rhineland-Palatinate via Twitter to avoid the area in the city center. A large contingent of police and rescue workers was in action.
