Warning about intraocular lenses known as ‘smart lens’ among the people, Assoc. Dr. Aylin Kılıç, “There is no such lens as a smart lens. Currently, no lenses used in the market are so smart. Multifocal or 3-focus intraocular lenses, which are also used in cataract surgeries to get rid of close glasses, are used for advertising purposes because of the definition of smart lens used for advertising purposes in the public opinion It can lead to surgeries, “he said.
Providing information about multifocal intraocular lenses, which are referred to as a solution to the near and far vision problem and known as smart lenses among the people, Assoc. Dr. Aylin Kılıç said, “Multifocal or 3-focused intraocular lenses, which are also used in cataract surgeries to get rid of close glasses, can lead to false expectations and unnecessary surgeries in the public due to the definition of smart lens used for advertising purposes. While most people do not understand when a multi-focal lens is offered to those who want to get rid of their close glasses, interest and curiosity increases when the smart lens is mentioned. Some patients, affected by the name of smart lens, ignore many facts and accept surgery. The truth is there is no ‘smart lens’ today. “In the near future, when intraocular lens technology develops, we will see different designs, but no lenses currently used in the market are not as smart as they think,” he warned.
“CONCEPT AND EXPECTATION MAY CREATE CONFLICT IN PATIENTS”
Providing information about the lenses known as smart lens among the people, Assoc. Dr. Aylin Kılıç said, “Intraocular lenses that allow us to get rid of near glasses are actually 2-focused, 3-focused lenses with depth together. The biggest difference of these lenses from single vision lenses is that they save patients from near and far glasses together and increase the quality of life because they have a special design. “It is not ideal to call these lenses as smart lenses, primarily because it is not scientific, it causes confusion of concepts and expectations with patients.”
“EVEN YOUNG PEOPLE DEMAND”
Stating that the definition of intraocular lenses that save from multi-focus or close glasses is more accurate, Kılıç said, “The word smart lens affects the perceptions of the patients to accept this, but these lenses sometimes do not fit their expectations as expected. Although multifocal lenses save from near glasses with a very good performance, not every patient can see the same benefit. Therefore, patient selection is very important. Not all age groups and all tricks are ideal. To give an example, even the young patients started to demand smart lenses, although they are suitable for laser, because they have a different perception in this direction.
“NOT SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE”
Stating that it is not right to apply multifocal lenses to every patient, Kılıç completed his words as follows:
“Multifocal lenses should be applied to ideal patients and their side effects should be mentioned. These intraocular lenses have side effects, albeit very little. For example, there may be glows in the lights, especially in the night lights, especially in the first months. This situation does not happen in every patient. But the patient has a right to know all the possibilities. I have to admit that no artificial intraocular lens can restore our vision quality in our youth, but it increases our quality of life and saves it from glasses. It is not easy to wear glasses nowadays, especially when we are addicted to masks. The vast majority of patients who have had this surgery state that they get rid of their visual complaints. Thanks to these lenses, we do not have a life-long cataract surgery. The number of multifocal lenses placed in the eye does not change throughout life, it is fixed. It is imperative that all surgeons who perform this surgery take their time and inform their patients on this subject.
