Avenida Niemeyer, which links the neighborhoods of Leblon to São Conrado, in the southern part of the city of Rio de Janeiro, will be closed at certain times for cleaning the hillside from today (14) until the 22nd. According to the Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure, the action is preventive and will occur whenever the technicians identify a need.
On January 14, 15, 18, 19, 21 and 22, the ban will be from 10 pm to 5 am. On January 16, 17 and 20, the closing will be earlier, from 9 am to 5 pm.
The entrance and exit of residents of Avenida Niemeyer, in the stretch between buildings number 550 and 101, will be made through the neighborhood of São Conrado, via Avenida Mayor Mendes de Morais, through the following main and adjacent roads: Rafael Mascarenhas Acoustic Tunnel, Zuzu Angel Tunnel, Engineer Fernando Mac Dowell Highway and Avenida Mayor Mendes de Morais.
On Tuesday (12), the President of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), Minister Humberto Martins, dismissed a new request by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) to interdict Avenida Niemeyer.
The avenue was closed on May 27, 2019, when the State Court of Justice (TJRJ) ordered its closure after a storm that hit the city and caused landslides on the road. In February of the same year, another storm had already caused landslides and the death of two people in Niemeyer, buried in a bus that was hit by a tree that descended from the hillside.
In June 2019, the Court maintained the closure, in a second instance decision. In February 2020, the city appealed to the STJ asking for the reopening of the road and obtained a favorable decision on March 10, after the municipality reported having invested R $ 34 million in 56 interventions along Avenida Niemeyer until December 2019.
On March 20, 2020, the MPRJ appealed to the STJ, asking for the closure again, but it was not answered. Recently, the MPRJ again warned of the existence of real danger to the lives of people who circulate around the site, due to a new landslide that occurred at the end of December last year.
