But did you know that there is something he could not achieve? Stay with the love of your life. We tell you the tragic love story he lived with his wife Soumaya Domit Gemayel.
How did Carlos Slim meet his wife?
Although he was born in Mexico CityHis parents were Lebanese immigrants who arrived in the country in 1902 and founded a small haberdashery in the heart of the Mexican capital. Little by little it bore fruit, bought property during the revolution and they moved to live in the area of Polanco, they met a family that was also Lebanese and lived a few houses away. It is said that one day Carlos accompanied his mother – who was a friend of the mother in that family – and was struck by the moment he saw Soumaya, daughter of Antonio Domit and Lili Gemayel, and niece of the former president of Lebanon , Amin Gemayel. He was 24 years old – currently 80 – and she just 15. They were married just two years later.
Carlos Slim inherited his father’s passion for entrepreneurship, Julian Slim, and after graduating from the Autonomous University of Mexico, and teaching mathematics classes at the same institution, opened a brokerage house began to invest little by little in the business purchase. All this with the help of his wife. He even founded the conglomerate with the name Carso Group because it is the union of the first letters of their names.
They were married for 33 years and had six children: Carlos Slim Domit, Johanna Slim de Ayub – married to Arturo Elías Ayub– Marco Antonio Slim Domit, Soumaya Slim Domit – who divorced Fernando Romero– Vanessa Slim Domit, Slim y Patrick Damit.
During their more than three decades of marriage, Carlos and Soumaya not only created an empire but also dedicated themselves to altruistic causes such as Telmex Foundation and to travel the world to appreciate culture and art, a passion that Soumaya is said to have infected Carlos. It is said that she was far from the stereotype of a society lady, and that on the contrary she was characterized by being affectionate and never pretentious, always worried about social struggles and helping whoever she could.
Soumaya’s family already had a difficult history with kidney failure – her father and brother died from this complication- and although she received a kidney from her mother at the age of 30, things turned dark again due to the cruel disease 20 years later. In 1999, he died of kidney failure.
Carlos Slim lives to honor her
After his death, Carlos promised not to start a family again and he has fulfilled it so far because he considers his family to be perfect as it is. In honor of his late wife, he built the Museo Soumaya with the aim that Mexicans appreciate international art, just as he did with his wives, but without having to travel. It also distributes large amounts among its foundations and supports causes directly related to organ donation.
