In Somalia, police said security forces thwarted an attack on the presidential palace in Mogadishu.

The alleged assassin blew himself up, killing himself and a passer-by and injuring seven other people, a police spokesman announced on Saturday.

Police officer Ahmed Bashane told the German press agency that the police followed and shot at a suspicious car after it broke through a checkpoint and raced towards the presidential palace. The driver was able to detonate his explosive charge before reaching the destination. Twelve vehicles were destroyed in the explosion, which could be heard far through the capital.

The Sunni terror group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on its Andalus radio station. The group, which is close to the terror network Al-Qaeda, has been fighting for supremacy in the East African country for years.
