The Committee on Legal Affairs of the European Parliament has approved this Tuesday the report that asks to lift the Europarliamentary immunity of the former president of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont, as requested by the Supreme Court to the European Parliament to be able to judge the independence politician in Spain.
The adoption of the reports has gone ahead with 15 votes in favor, eight against and two abstentions, announced the president of the parliamentary committee, Adrián Vázquez (Citizens), in statements to the press at the headquarters of the European Parliament.
This is the first step for the European institution to formally respond to the Spanish authorities, although the final decision will not be known until the same report is submitted to the vote of the next plenary session of the European Parliament. scheduled for the week of March 8.
In addition to giving its approval to Puigdemont’s request, the Legal Affairs committee has also approved the reports that endorse the suspension of the immunity of the two former Puigdemont councilors who fled with him to Belgium and now occupy a seat in the European Parliament, Toni Comín Y Clara Ponsatí.
