Implacable Bayern, immortal Giroud

The Bavarians, despite many absent, rolled over Lazio (1-4), in the round of 16 first leg of the Champions League. Olivier Giroud scored an incredible goal for Chelsea against Atlético de Madrid (0-1).

The defending champion is doing well, thank you for him. Hans-Dieter Flick had to face a cascade of absentees? The “Rekordmeister” remained on two unsuccessful matches in the Bundesliga? Not enough to shake a Munich house which taught Romans certainly in shape in Serie A, but who had not set foot at this level of competition since the transition to the year 2000.

Two goals, two records

The worst part is that it was the Italians who shot themselves in the front foot. Lewandowski took advantage of a failed back pass from Musacchio to open the scoring, overtake legend Raul on the shelves and become alone the 3rd highest scorer in the history of the competition – behind the two monsters Ronaldo and Messi – from the 9th minute of the meeting.

Unbeaten for 17 games in “C1” and at the end of their last 19 continental trips, the Bavarians have completely smothered the Romans lost on the meadow. Because after Lewandowski’s flair, the Germans made a second difference thanks to the nascent class of Musiala, scorer for the 4th time this season.

The Englishman became the youngest from his country to score in the most prestigious of club competitions, turning 18 next Friday, and the second to score in the knockout phase, after a certain Bojan with Barça in 2008 (17 years and 217 days).

A return match for the form

The ordeal continued just before and after the break for the Laziale. Following a new ball lost at midfield and a nice tumble from Coman, the Frenchman ignited Pepe Reina. The veteran cerberus could only push back in front of him, where Sané was, who only had to push the leather to the right place (42nd). Back from the locker room, it was Acerbi who scored 1-4 against his camp (47th), after an overflow from the son of the legendary former striker of Lausanne-Sport. Correa’s 1-4, two minutes later, will not change much to the interest of the return match on March 17.

Flying Giroud

At the Arena Nationala in Bucharest, where Atlético had to “receive” due to travel restrictions in Spain linked to Covid-19, the Iberians at first seemed at home. They had two huge opportunities to open the scoring in the first quarter of an hour, first because of a failed control by the goalkeeper Mendy (4th), then on a cross from Suarez that Lemar failed to push in the right place (14th). It was just a flash in the pan.

Chelsea tried to react with Werner (39th), but Oblak is not one of the best goalkeepers in the world for nothing. The Londoners finally scored the important away goal thanks to the inevitable Giroud. The Frenchman flew into the air and opened the scoring with an overturned chisel that the referees took long minutes to grant after video review, where they ultimately found no offside. One of the rare lights in the Romanian night.
