Imola is always good for shows. The traditional course also found a few victims in qualifying. We have the highlights …

Imola is actually considered Ferrari’s home game because the track is owned by the sports car manufacturer from Maranello. But while the Scuderia employees had to travel 90 kilometers to get there, the Alpha Tauri employees only had 17 kilometers of road from the factory to the paddock. Red Bull’s small B-Team has its home in Faenza, which is really only a stone’s throw away.

The proximity to the base means that Yuki Tsunoda has never driven more kilometers in a Formula 1 car on any other route. Last year, the Japanese was allowed to do the first laps here in an old Toro Rosso racer. In January the exercise program went into the next phase. The rookie, who is only 1.59 meters long, should actually know where the pitfalls of the 4.909-kilometer long traditional circuit lie.

But no sooner had his first Imola qualifying started than it was over again. Tsunoda was a bit too ambitious in the Alta variant. No sooner had the newcomer turned into the chicane than he lost control. When changing direction he was overtaken by his stern. The turner ended with the rear part first in the boundary wall.

“I was already a bit too fast at the entrance,” said the youngest pilot in the field at the age of 20. “We really wanted to get through Q1 with a try so as not to use any more sets of tires. I was a bit too brave. I have to apologize to the team for that. I can only hope that it will rain tomorrow. Then a lot can happen . Maybe then the others will make the mistakes. ”

Dramatic qualification spectacle

The mechanics are now faced with an intensive night shift. The rear of the AT02 was completely destroyed. After all, the supply of spare parts shouldn’t be a problem. As I said, the warehouse in the factory is only 10 minutes away. And maybe you should plan a few bottles of champagne when ordering. Pierre Gasly will start from fifth in the sister car and with a bit of luck he could make it onto the podium.

However, Lewis Hamilton and his two pursuers from Red Bull have the greatest chances of one of the first three places. It was once again a great movie to see how the world champion was able to fend off the attack of his challengers in qualifying and secure the 99th pole position. Team-mate Valtteri Bottas showed how not to do it, starting from position eight on Sunday.

In the gallery we show you once again the spectacular Tsunoda accident and all the other highlights from the qualifying Saturday in Imola.
